What is glycerin?
Glycerin (also called glycerol) is a humectant, an ingredient that draws water into the skin and helps it stay there. It is one of the most common and best-established moisturizing ingredients, and it appears near the top of the ingredient list in a huge number of cleansers, serums, and creams.
It is not flashy, and that is the point. Glycerin is a quiet workhorse: inexpensive, gentle, effective, and suitable for almost every skin type.
What glycerin does
- attracts and holds water in the skin
- helps skin feel soft, smooth, and comfortable
- supports the barrier and reduces the tight, dry feeling after cleansing
- makes other formulas feel more cushioned and less stripping
Glycerin works a lot like hyaluronic acid: both are humectants. Glycerin is smaller, extremely well-tolerated, and often does the same core hydration job at a fraction of the cost. Many good moisturizers use both.
Why it rarely gets attention
Because glycerin is cheap and unglamorous, brands rarely build marketing around it, even though it is doing much of the actual hydrating. When a product feels comfortable and non-stripping, glycerin is frequently part of the reason.
Like other humectants, glycerin works best when there is something to seal it in. Pairing it with occlusives or ceramides keeps the water it attracts from evaporating, especially in dry air.
