    Vitamin C

Also seen as: L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate
    All ingredients

    What it does

An antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals from UV and pollution, while also brightening dark spots and supporting collagen synthesis.

    Best for

Dull skin, hyperpigmentation, daytime use under SPF. Most effective at 10-20% L-ascorbic acid.

What is vitamin C in skincare?

Vitamin C is the most studied topical antioxidant in skincare. Its main job is to help protect skin from daily oxidative stress caused by UV and pollution, while also helping to brighten uneven tone and support collagen.

It is mainly a daytime, prevention-focused ingredient. It will not exfoliate, hydrate, or clear breakouts, but it adds an antioxidant layer of defense that most other actives do not.

    What vitamin C helps with

    • antioxidant protection against UV and pollution damage
    • brightening dull skin and fading the look of dark spots over time
    • supporting collagen, which helps firmness
    • evening out overall tone with consistent use

It is not an overnight brightener and does not replace sunscreen. Think of it as a partner to SPF: sunscreen blocks a lot of UV, and vitamin C helps mop up some of what gets through.

    Forms and stability

Pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is the most potent form, usually most effective around 10 to 20%. Its weakness is stability: it oxidizes when exposed to light, air, and water, turning yellow-brown and losing strength. If your vitamin C serum has gone dark, it is past its best.

More stable derivatives trade some potency for a longer shelf life and a gentler feel, which can suit sensitive skin.

    How to use it

Use vitamin C in the morning, under sunscreen, to make the most of its antioxidant role. It pairs well with vitamin E and ferulic acid, which help stabilize it, and with niacinamide (the old cancellation myth has been debunked). Store it away from light and heat, and replace it if it darkens.

    Evidence

Topical vitamin C reduces photodamage and improves skin tone evenness.
