The full picture
Panthenol (D-panthenol, dexpanthenol) is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. Once it hits skin it converts to pantothenic acid and integrates into the coenzyme A pathway that supports cellular repair. Topically it is a strong humectant and barrier supporter, which is why dermatologists recommend pure 5% panthenol creams for post-laser recovery. In a lifting cream it usually appears at 2 to 5% as a comfort-and-tolerability ingredient that lets stronger actives like peptides or retinoids work without leaving skin tight.
Evidence
Topical panthenol has well-documented effects on skin barrier improvement, hydration, and reduced sensitivity in clinical studies.
