What it does
A lightweight, biocompatible emollient that closely mimics skin's own sebum. Locks in moisture without feeling heavy or pore-clogging.
Best for
All skin types. A safe occlusive layer for dry or sensitive skin; non-comedogenic enough for oily skin.
The full picture
Squalane is the hydrogenated, shelf-stable cousin of squalene (a lipid your skin produces naturally that oxidizes too fast to use in a formula). Modern squalane is sustainably sourced from olives or sugarcane and is one of the most versatile occlusive emollients in skincare. It is non-greasy, non-comedogenic, and biocompatible enough to layer on any skin type. In lifting creams it tends to be a supporting cast member, helping the formula glide and stay on skin, rather than the hero active.
Evidence
Squalane improves skin barrier function and reduces transepidermal water loss.
