RoC and La Roche-Posay both sell retinol and anti-aging face care, priced from $21.99 to $49.99 across the eight products here, four per brand. This is a label-and-data comparison, not a hands-on test, built from rocskincare.com and laroche-posay.us on September 29, 2026.
Neither brand prints a retinol percentage, so the comparison comes down to wording, format, fragrance, alcohol, and price. Only two products carry published sample sizes: RoC's eye cream (23 and 10 people) and La Roche-Posay's Hyalu B5 serum (85 people).

Who owns RoC and La Roche-Posay?
La Roche-Posay belongs to L'Oréal Groupe and sits in its Dermatological Beauty Division, while RoC is owned by the private equity firm Bridgepoint through its fund Bridgepoint Europe VII.
Bridgepoint completed its purchase of RoC from Gryphon Investors in February 2024. Gryphon had acquired RoC from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. RoC was founded in Paris in 1957 by Dr. Jean-Charles Lissarrague.
L'Oréal calls La Roche-Posay the world's leading dermatological brand, recommended by more than 100,000 dermatologists, and RoC calls itself the number 1 retinol brand, citing Nielsen data. Both are brand claims. RoC states on every product page that it is PETA-approved and cruelty free; the La Roche-Posay pages we read state no cruelty-free status.
Which retinol serum is better, RoC Capsules or La Roche-Posay Retinol B3?
RoC's capsules cost less at checkout and list no fragrance or denatured alcohol, while La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 adds niacinamide and costs less per ounce.

RoC calls its ingredient Clinical Retinol here and RoC Patented Retinol elsewhere, and its eye cream and night cream pages say it is 7x more effective than standard retinol, citing a clinical study with no published sample size or length. That is a claim about the ingredient, not this serum. La Roche-Posay describes "concentrated pure retinol and vitamin B3" plus gradual release retinol. RoC's product guide describes the capsules as pre-measured doses of an oil-based formula, and one pack is designed to last 1 month. La Roche-Posay notes that pure retinol can turn yellow in air, which it says does not affect tolerance or efficacy.
What each brand's own testing reports
RoC labels its capsule results "Clinically Proven Results" from consumer volunteers, with no grading method or sample size: 97% had visibly reduced lines and wrinkles after 1 night, skin was 64% more hydrated after 1 week, and 100% had visibly firmer skin at 4 weeks.
La Roche-Posay's figures are self-assessments from what it calls an 8-week clinical study, with no sample size: 96% say their skin feels softer, 90% say it appears refined, and 82% say it looks younger. Neither set of figures is independent.
Outside research covers the ingredients, not these serums: a 2007 study on improvement of naturally aged skin with vitamin A (retinol) and a 2005 study reporting that niacinamide improves the appearance of aging facial skin.
Which retinol eye cream is better, RoC or Redermic R Eyes?
RoC Line Smoothing Eye Cream costs $28 less than La Roche-Posay Redermic R Eyes for the same 15 mL, and only RoC publishes sample sizes. Both list no fragrance or denatured alcohol, and both brands say their eye cream was ophthalmologist tested.

RoC cites a clinical study of 23 subjects for its 4-week before-and-after images. Its Eye Age page describes an 8-week study with a board-certified dermatologist and 10 women, measured with the VISIA Skin Analysis System, and reports that all 10 had a lower "eye age," an imaging-based score, by up to 10 years. That is an instrumental measure on a small group. Its headline figures, 90% seeing dark circles visibly reduced at 4 weeks and crow's feet visibly reduced by 50% at 12 weeks, carry no sample size.
Redermic R Eyes pairs retinol with caffeine in a gel texture with an applicator tip, and its claims are descriptive only, such as visibly reducing the look of crow's feet and dark circles.
Which night cream should you pick, RoC Deep Wrinkle or Toleriane Double Repair?
RoC Deep Wrinkle Night Cream is a retinol cream and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair is a moisturizer with no retinol, so pick RoC for retinol in a cream and Toleriane to follow a retinol serum. Toleriane costs about a third as much per ounce.

RoC says the cream is clinically proven to reduce the look of wrinkles by up to 50%, and that 96% had an improvement in the look of deep wrinkles at 12 weeks, with no sample size or grading method. RoC estimates a tube lasts 6 to 8 weeks of nightly use.
Toleriane's named key ingredients are ceramide-3, glycerin, niacinamide, and prebiotic thermal water; our ceramides page covers the first. It claims a skin barrier result after 1 hour and up to 48-hour hydration, with no study details.
Is RoC Firm + Lift or La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 better for firmness and hydration?
RoC Multi Correxion Firm + Lift is a firming cream and La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 is a hyaluronic acid serum, and neither contains retinol. Firm + Lift costs less per ounce, and Hyalu B5 has the only published sample size of the pair.

Firm + Lift contains no retinol. Its named technology, RoC THPE with Bugrane, pairs tetrahydroxypropyl ethylenediamine (7th of 39) with Ononis spinosa root extract (21st). RoC reports that 89% had a visible lift in minutes, 94% had a visibly tighter, more lifted neck and jawline at 8 weeks, and firmness rose 1.9X at 8 weeks, with no sample size or measurement method. It is a limited edition formula, sold in the US only on RoC's site. No cream lifts skin the way a procedure does.
In a four-week consumer self-assessment, 85 people applied Hyalu B5 twice a day; 91% agreed their skin felt smoother instantly and 96% agreed its texture appeared refined. Its 7-day clinical claim on hyaluronic acid delivery and 1-hour instrumental barrier claim give no sample sizes. How do you start retinol with RoC or La Roche-Posay?
RoC and La Roche-Posay both point to evening use, a gradual start, and sunscreen during the day.
- RoC capsules: one capsule a night on the face and neck, starting every other night, with SPF 30 or higher in the morning.
- RoC's product guide, which compares only RoC ranges: start with one retinol product two to three nights a week, build up as tolerated, and avoid layering several if you are new to retinol.
- Retinol B3: 3 to 4 drops in the evening on the face and neck, avoiding the eye area. The carton says not to combine it with other retinol products.
- Redermic R Eyes: evenings, from the inner corner of the eye outward, with a daily broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
