Pick Clinique if you want the lower price and no fragrance on any label. Pick Estée Lauder if you want Advanced Night Repair itself, or an eye cream that comes with published test results.
Estée Lauder and Clinique have the same owner, but the seven products we compared differ in ways that matter. Clinique costs less per ounce in every category below, and none of its four labels lists fragrance. Estée Lauder charges more, and one of its three products contains fragrance.
Clinique's serum leans on a retinoid and four peptides, while Estée Lauder's starts with bifida ferment lysate. For moisturizer, your skin type decides it: Clinique makes a light gel-cream and a mineral oil lotion for dry skin, and the Estée Lauder cream we compared is a rich one.

- Choose Clinique if fragrance irritates your skin. Clinique says all its skincare and makeup is allergy tested and 100% fragrance free, and none of the four Clinique ingredient lists we read includes fragrance. Estée Lauder's Revitalizing Supreme+ Youth Power Creme contains it.
- Choose Clinique if you want a retinoid serum for less money. Smart Clinical Repair costs $109 for 1.7 oz, lists hydroxypinacolone retinoate, and reports a 16-week clinical result on 67 women.
- Choose Estée Lauder if you want an eye cream with numbers behind it. Estée Lauder reports higher skin moisture 100 hours after one application of Advanced Night Repair Eye (31 women). Clinique's All About Eyes page gives one result, a 3-second depuff with massage, and no test details.
Are Estée Lauder and Clinique the same company?
Yes, Estée Lauder and Clinique share an owner: The Estée Lauder Companies launched Clinique in September 1968 at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Estée Lauder is the parent company's namesake brand, which makes the two sister brands.
Clinique began with a magazine story. In 1967, Vogue beauty editor Carol Phillips ran a feature called "Can Great Skin Be Created?" with New York dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich. Leonard Lauder then asked Phillips to help build a new brand, and Evelyn Lauder named it. Clinique opened with 117 products, including the 3-Step System, all allergy tested and fragrance-free.

Advanced Night Repair vs Smart Clinical Repair
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Clinique Smart Clinical Repair share three ingredients, sodium hyaluronate, caffeine, and squalane, and then go separate ways on actives.

Advanced Night Repair lists bifida ferment lysate right after water. Estée Lauder adds tripeptide-32, which it calls its Night Peptide, plus hyaluronic acid as sodium hyaluronate, caffeine, and squalane.
Smart Clinical Repair lists dimethicone second. Its CL1870 Peptide Complex combines four peptides: palmitoyl tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, and palmitoyl hexapeptide-12. The "advanced retinoid" is hydroxypinacolone retinoate, a form of retinoid. Clinique says the serum contains 9.5% peptides and 1% advanced retinoid. It does not explain how it counts the 9.5%. The four peptides sit 19th to 22nd on the label, below caffeine.
What each brand's own testing reports
Both brands publish two kinds of numbers. A clinical figure comes from an instrument or a trained grader measuring skin. A consumer figure comes from women rating their own skin on a questionnaire, so it shows how they saw the results, not how much their skin changed.
- Advanced Night Repair: a 128% increase in skin moisture after one application (clinical, 148 women), and 14% fewer visible fine lines 12 hours after one night's use (26 women).
- Smart Clinical Repair: all 67 women in a 16-week clinical test showed visibly reduced lines and wrinkles. In consumer testing on 358 women, 94% said skin felt smoother and 90% said it felt firmer, under a 10-day results heading. Among 354 women, 88% agreed it was gentle and non-irritating.
Clinique also calls the serum "effective as a laser on the look of lines and wrinkles." Its footnote compares 16 weeks of twice-daily use with one microablative fractional CO2 laser treatment and gives no sample size. A 2025 paper in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology uses the same design, testing a hydroxypinacolone retinoate and peptide serum against one fractional CO2 laser treatment in 71 women aged 40 to 65. Expert graders scored the serum group equal to or better than the laser group at 16 weeks.
That study has limits. The abstract does not name the product, the laser group had a single session, and the authors list affiliations with Clinique, The Estée Lauder Companies, and the Orentreich Medical Group. A serum can improve how lines look over months. It does not replace a course of laser treatments.
Which moisturizer is better, Estée Lauder or Clinique?
Clinique's moisturizers cost far less than Estée Lauder's Revitalizing Supreme+, and the right Clinique depends on your skin. Moisture Surge 100H is the light, oil-free option, and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ is made for dry skin.

Revitalizing Supreme+ is the rich pick for face and neck. It contains acetyl hexapeptide-8, better known as Argireline, which Clinique's Smart Clinical Repair serum also lists. Among 110 women, 89% said their skin looked more lifted after 4 weeks and 95% said it felt firmer after 2 weeks. Those are self-ratings. It contains fragrance.
Moisture Surge 100H is a gel-cream that Clinique's FAQ calls oil-free, with dimethicone second on the label, and Clinique lists it for every skin type from very dry to oily. In clinical testing, all 19 women showed an instant hydration boost and all 27 showed an instant glow boost. In a 1-week consumer test on 110 women, 95% said skin looked plump and 98% said it felt more resilient.
Clinique calls the product 100H, but the US product page gives no study details for 100 hours of hydration, so read "100H" as a name, not a measured result. Moisture Surge also comes in a 2.5 oz size for $65 ($25.63 per ounce): the same size as Revitalizing Supreme+ at less than half the price.
Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ is the budget pick for dry skin at $8.04 per ounce. Mineral oil, glycerin, and petrolatum fill the second through fourth spots, with urea eighth. Clinique lists it for very dry to dry and dry combination skin. In clinical testing on 21 women, Clinique reports a 119% increase in skin moisture right after application and a 21% stronger skin barrier within 2 hours. Which eye cream is better, Estée Lauder or Clinique?
Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Eye has the published results, and Clinique's All About Eyes costs half as much for the same 0.5 oz size.

Advanced Night Repair Eye carries the same bifida ferment lysate and tripeptide-32 as the serum. No fragrance is listed, but the formula includes lavender flower extract and chamomile flower oil. Its 100-hour moisture result names a sample size, which the 100H in Moisture Surge's name does not.
All About Eyes lists caffeine ninth, and its vitamin C is magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Clinique says it is ophthalmologist tested and helps hold eye makeup in place. The 1 oz jar carries an older, different ingredient list, so our notes cover the 0.5 oz jar only.
Which is better for sensitive skin, Estée Lauder or Clinique?
Clinique edges out Estée Lauder for sensitive skin, mainly because every Clinique product here lists no fragrance and one Estée Lauder product does. Clinique says its skincare and makeup are "all allergy tested, 100% fragrance free," and says its formulas have had nearly 6 million allergy test applications to date.
